Football fans in our country, and especially the fans of Vojvodina, are looking forward to Sunday’s clash at the Karađorđe stadium, where currently the two first-placed teams on the table – Vojvodina and Red Star – will meet in the 15th round of the Serbian Super League. It will be the 170th match between these two clubs, in which the Belgraders will try to strengthen themselves even more in the first place with a victory, while Voša will try to make the title race more uncertain and interesting also by winning points.
Unfortunately, due to the current epidemiological situation, the match will be played without the presence of spectators, but there is no doubt that the hearts of all those who love the Old Lady will be with the home team on Sunday and hope for its victory. Although he has been living abroad for years, one of them will certainly be 30-year-old Slobodan Medojević, the former captain of the red and whites, who is currently in Cyprus, where he plays for the local first league side AEL Limassol.
As someone who grew up in FK Vojvodina, and then was the captain of the first team, the popular Meda has always had a special relationship with the fans, for whom he was and remained one of the most favorite players of their club in the last 20 years. Of course, just as they do not forget him, so he does not forget his Vojvodina, which he follows whenever his obligations and circumstances allow.
– Honestly, I have to admit that I don’t really follow our league much, but Vojvodina always, that is, whenever my obligations allow it. If I am able, I watch the game live, and if I am not, then I check the result and highlights. I am very glad that the guys are playing well for the second season in a row and recording good results, because that only confirms that they have quality and that they are not accidentally where they are. I sincerely want them to go one step higher this season, that is, to try to attack the title – says Medojević.
Apart from his football quality and innate leadership on the pitch, the fans of the Old Lady also remember him as an uncompromising fighter, who did his best for the coat of arms of the club in which he made his first football steps in every match. According to him, such an approach is a key precondition for winning the upcoming clash.
– The most important precondition is to enter that game without fear and any respect, that is, for the players to be daring and rude in football term. They have to believe in themselves, because they definitely have quality. Red Star also has a good team, but they play on three fronts, they are tired and, if we impose a strong rhythm on them from the start, I think we have a good chance – Medojević points out.
He played for a full seven and a half years in Germany, where he defended the colors of Wolfsburg, Eintracht and Darmstadt, after which he moved to Cyprus last summer and signed a contract with AEL, which is currently in third place in the Cypriot league.
– I am satisfied with the course of the season so far, although of course it can always be better, and our goal is to get involved in the fight for the title this season. As for some plans for the future, I have a contract here until 2023. I like Cyprus as a country and I enjoy being here with my family, but in football you never know what tomorrow will bring – said Medojević.
It is interesting that he played the last match in Vojvodina jersey against Red Star in December 2011, when, with goals from Miroslav Stevanović and Marko Ljubinković, Voša won in Belgrade with the result 2-0. There is no doubt that everyone who is attached to the Old Lady would like the same result to be on Sunday.
