Welcome home – that is how everyone at Karađorđe stadium greeted Mihailo Ivanović. After a phenomenal season in England, this young attacker returned to his Novi Sad, and headed straight to the game of Voša.
He didn’t hide his emotions. He was celebrating, sweating about the game, and cheering Voša on…When the game was finished, he greeted his ex-teammates with an applause after the victory against TSC (2:0) in the semifinals of the Serbian Cup.
- It is always a pleasure to be at Karađorđe stadium, this is where I feel at home. It is amazing to see so many people who came to support Vojvodina on the path to finale. We all know that the club is returning to the right path, where they will be even more successful and win trophies, just like they deserve. This match confirms that – said the young attacker.
He watches the games of Voša in England as well, but supporting them from the stadium is an entirely different experience.
- It is so different when you are at the stadium, and when you experience that emotion with your co-players, fans, and the entire club. When you watch a game on TV or your phone, you cannot feel this atmosphere, where fans give such amazing support to their team. It is all more emotional when you watch the match live, and I am happy and privileged to have been a witness to this great victory of Vojvodina.
Mihailo believes wholeheartedly that Voša can defeat the Red Star this year, and win the trophy of the Serbian Cup.
- I hope and believe that Vojvodina can take the Cup this year. It is my great desire. Last year we failed to do so, so I hope that this year they can achieve that without me (laughing).
With his great performances in the jersey of Millwall, he won hearts of their fans as well as the media in England. He used his chance in the best possible way, and became the lead star of the team. He described his experience in the cult club…
- Of course, when you go abroad, it is hardest in the beginning, getting accustomed to the new surroundings. During that period, I had huge support of my teammates and people from the club. It so happened that they changed the coach, and I gained the trust of a new coach. He started putting me in the games more often, and I repaid him with my goals and good performances.
Ivanović succeeded in doing something that very few people managed to do. He broke through the steel defence of Barnley, and scored a goal. We are talking about Burnley FC, a team that received only 15 goals on 46 matches in the championship. In the end that wasn’t enough, because Millwall was defeated 3:1 in the match of the 46th round of Championship, and was thereby left without the play-off for the place in the Premier League.
- When you look at where we were in the beginning, and how far we got…I don’t think anyone was hoping for us getting so close to the play-off. However, when we already got so far, it would have been nice being in the play-off. We were out of luck. I tried not to listen to those stories about the rivals, their defence etc, because I think no one is invincible, especially when you have such a team, and when you see how much we work at our practices. We went there with a goal to win, we took the lead, but we were not lucky enough, and everything went south when we received that goal for 1:1. Still, there is always hope for the next season, we are preparing and hoping for another step ahead.
Millwall is famous for their large number of die-hard fans, and the relationship Miha has built with them is special.
- I heard that a lot of people in Serbia now watches Millwall, and it makes me happy. Our fans are phenomenal, they fell in love with me, and I fell in love with them from day one. Both on the side, and at home, they will come to support Millwall and they are amazing in every way – Ivanović concluded.
